Septic System Tips

If you have never lived in a home that had a private septic system here are some do's and dont's that you should know.

Do:
Have the system pumped every year or two.
Think about conserving water by only running the dishwasher and laundry with full loads and install low flow shower heads and faucets.
Divert gutters and surface water away from the leaching field.
Buy septic system safe toilet paper so it will not clog the pipes.

Don't:
Drive over the septic or leaching area.
Do not put large plants too close to the leaching field, roots can cause damage.

Do not install a garbage disposal.
Bacteria is important for the septic to work properly so avoid putting anything down the drain that is bad for bacteria like bleach products, powdered laundry detergent, colored toilet paper or caustic drain cleaners.
Don't put coffee grounds down the drain, they will float and clog up the leaching field.

Take good care of your septic system and hopefully it will take good care of you for years to come! :)
